Now there have been great advances in packaging. Products stay fresh longer. Bottles and bags come in all shapes and sizes. And some, indeed, are easier to open and close. In this area, manufacturers have a long way to go.
I also like to munch on nuts. Some packagers have added zip lock sealing to keep the contents from spilling and to keep it fresh. Kudos!
But why then is it so difficult to tear off the top seal above the zip lock? On these products, I often give up in frustration and resort to removing the tops with scissors. Okay at home; not so great traveling, especially at an airport. It really warms my heart toward a brand when I struggle to open a package of their nuts only to have to use so much force that when the bag finally opens the contents go flying.
Has anyone bothered to talk with consumers as they try and cope with opening and using the products these bottles and bags contain?
It sure doesn’t seem so.
It can be done. I recently filled a prescription and was happy to find that it is now very easy to open and close. Years ago, the so-called child-proof caps on medications required a child to get them open. So improvements can happen.
Consumers need to be included in every aspect of the product development cycle. Talk with them, observe them, step into their shoes.
Starbucks, are you listening?
